KATX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar on Camano Island in Island County, Washington, the radar the National Weather Service lists as Seattle. The NWS Seattle/Tacoma forecast office at 7600 Sand Point Way NE in Seattle runs it and calls it the Camano Island radar. The NWS Radar Operations Center carries the station under the system name Seattle with the radar site at Everett, and NCEI records Everett as an alias of the station.
NCEI's station inventory lists the radar under the principal name Seattle with WBAN number 94287 and dates its record from February 1995. The NWS radar list gives the antenna elevation as 642 feet and the owner as the NWS. In 2019 the transmitter pedestal was refurbished under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, which the office described as the third phase of a 5 year program to keep the WSR-88D fleet running into the 2030s.
Camano, the community on the island, is about 3 km from the antenna and Stanwood about 11 km to the east. Everett is about 32 km to the south-east, Seattle about 67 km to the south, Mount Vernon about 28 km to the north-east and Bellingham about 63 km to the north. Victoria, British Columbia, is about 69 km to the west across the border.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
